Every new person that enters this music business can't seem to gain a good footing in this game. Which is why you feel that the game is rigged for only 10% of people playing, right? I get it. The big bad labels are taking the fun away from everybody. But what if I told you that if you only had this one thing, you'd be in the top 10% of artists that actually make a career out of this game? Well, shockingly this is true, so tune in!
You don’t know what you want and that’s why you’re struggling!
The only reason why any music artist is not getting the fame, fortune, or freedom that they want and desire is because they don't know what they want to achieve with their music right now in this moment and three months beyond that. The question is: how will achieving that desired goal change your career, change your ability to connect with your audience, and what will happen to your career growth if you fail to take action with that goal? If you can answer those three questions, purpose begins to form in what you're doing. Even though it seems like you've got it all together, it would be best if you took time to develop answers to those questions because when that happens, not only will purpose emerge, but the ability to take action will find its way to your hands, feet, mind, heart, and soul so that opportunities begin to open up just by writing it down alone.
Why does all of this even matter?!
Every artist in the music game knows what's the best-case scenario if they decide to pursue their goals, but what are the setbacks you might face if you ignore the opportunities in front of you or just flat out don't go after your goals? Why is right now the right time to focus on this goal that you have in mind? Figuring out why this matters to you means everything to getting on the other side of the fame, fortune, and freedom goals you desire. You may already know what's going to happen if you achieve it and what might not happen if you don't achieve it, but the true question lies in: Is now the right time to focus on this goal? How does it align with your current circumstance as an artist? Answering these questions allows you to achieve framing and focus for your goals, but if you don't at least focus on whether now is the right time to proceed, then all the other stuff that you're thinking about doesn't matter at all—it will all fall apart because those other things are predicated on the present moment right now.
If it matters so much what’s your measure of success?
Now here's the number one mistake that everyone makes in this music industry when it comes to setting goals and creating a vision: they never set a criteria for success. They never set a metric by which they will achieve their goals—streams, followers, sales, and collaborations. What steps do you need to take to achieve each one or all of those goals to make it a reality, and what unproductive habits do you need to eliminate to stay focused on that goal? When you get this part right, this is like putting ether on a campfire. This gives you the proper motivation to move forward, so it would be best if you answered these questions in addition to all the other questions here. That way, you can actually achieve your goals when you set out on them, rather than starting and not finishing because the goal has no vision and no purpose.
What if I don't know what I want?
Everybody has a goal, even if you just want to go to the store. You just don't have clarity of vision—that's what this whole episode is about. You may also be suffering from decision fatigue, and the best way I get over that is writing out everything I want to do, organizing it, planning it out over time on a desired timeline, and cutting what is not necessary by only reviewing what I wrote and not adding more. Also, it could be that you need to go outside and experience life a bit. However, answer these three questions when you do figure it out:
How will achieving that desired goal change your career?
How will achieving that desired goal change your ability to connect with your audience?
What will happen to your career growth if you fail to take action with that goal?
What if now isn't the right time?
Timing is not the problem—you have an anxiety issue with taking action in the moment. Your goal may be 3 months away, but you have to take action now to get there. Get around it by evaluating your current position and aligning it with your goals. If you avoid the moment, opportunities will pass you by, but if you take advantage of the moment, you'll create momentum and progress in your career and life that you never thought would be possible.
What if I can't measure my success?
The problem is you're suffering from indecisiveness. You keep moving the goalpost forward when things are going well, and when things aren't going well, you move it back. Once you set the measurement by which you will achieve your goals, leave it—because if you move it, you'll never know what you did to get better or what you need to do to get better.
